马克思认为，宗教被当权者用于控制人民的鸦片。宗教不仅用于压迫劳动者，也让劳动者乐于被压迫。他认为如果宗教揭下心灵安慰剂的用途，劳动者就会意识到反抗。最终共产主义带来劳动人民的平等快乐。随后的俄国革命里的斯大林却用其他更残暴的方式压迫劳动者。所以，结论似乎是宗教即使作为鸦片，也有存在的价值。当权者总能找到压迫人民的方式。
